Personal AI computers for running large-scale models locally
Ghost Core actually offers a physical machine, not a subscription service. For just $3,499, you get a compact computer equipped with an NVIDIA RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell graphics card (with 24GB of video memory), an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 processor, 64GB of RAM, and 1TB of solid-state storage. The machine comes pre-installed with open-source large models such as Qwen and Gemma, and all calculations are performed locally – there are no monthly fees involved at all.
What it aims to do is act as a “personal assistant that remains constantly active and gradually gets to know you”: by connecting via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to your email, calendar, files, screen recordings, as well as wearable devices like Whoop and Oura and smart home systems, it can accumulate relevant information over time. Before you even ask a question, it will offer suggestions on its own. The manufacturer offers a 30-day return policy, and pre-orders for the first batch are already available; however, the exact delivery date is not specified on the official page.
Editor’s opinion: The concept is clear – the idea that data doesn’t need to leave one’s home indeed appeals to some people. However, for the same amount of money, one could also build a computer with 24GB of RAM and install Ollama, which would be capable of running models of similar size. The additional cost associated with Ghost Core mainly reflects the value of its integrated connectors and the “active assistant” software experience it offers. Whether this software is truly useful will have to wait for the real feedback from the first batch of users.
