A programming CLI designed for small, local models
“It doesn’t make small models smarter; it merely reduces the amount of frustration that arises when using them for tasks,” the author described Reika, this command-line programming intelligent agent, in these words.
It gives priority to small models that are running locally: The output of old tools is condensed into brief summaries, and requests are merely appended rather than rewritten, so as to ensure that the suggestion cache of the local inference engine remains intact. If duplicate readings are detected or if the inference process gets out of control, the system will automatically stop and indicate where the problem lies. Before making any modifications to files, the system requires users to read the content first; in the case of TypeScript changes, automatic type checking is performed. Additionally, there are several other modes available, such as planning first, conducting tests and obtaining reviews, simplifying the context, or simply engaging in chat – these can be switched between using the Shift+Tab key combination.
Dangerous commands still require confirmation; shell commands on macOS run within a kernel sandbox and do not support remote monitoring. The software is compatible with macOS, Linux, and Windows and can be installed via npm, pnpm, or Homebrew. It is open-source and free under the Apache-2.0 license. However, users will need to prepare their own model servers – for example, by using files like llama.cpp – which may pose a barrier for those who have no experience with developing local models.
